Internet Marketing Tips: With the start of a New Year, many of you are pumped up, excited & ready to finally get it right. Let's make 2014 the year that you finally get internet marketing right.
“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” ~Oprah Winfrey
Don’t know about you, but I have been anticipating the chance for a fresh start all during the month of December. The problem is I usually get carried away and plan for more than I could ever get done.
At the beginning of every year I experience a ‘motivation high’; I write a marketing plan, strategize, carve out time on my calendar, and commit to it by publishing it at my blog. However, by March I am usually behind schedule, scrambling to catch up and feeling a bit discouraged.
When your motivation is high, taking action is easy. Once it starts to dwindle down it gets a lot tougher.
You’ve probably experienced this in the past. The new year starts, you’re determined and get right to working on your goals. Things are going well for the first couple of weeks, maybe even the first couple of month but then all of the sudden, you find yourself a bit less motivated. You might skip taking action for a day or two due to your very reasonable excuses.
The next thing you know, you are making more and more excuses and before you know it – you feel like you have to ‘start over’. Worse yet, you may just give up, become discourage and quit… at least until next January.
So what can you do to prevent yourself from giving up on your goals only to end up setting the same ones over and over again every January 1st? Here are 6 tips that can help:
Internet Marketing Tips: Start Small with you New Years Marketing Plan
When your motivation is high, it is easy to start a ton of things all at once. If you go ‘all out’ from the beginning, you will burn yourself out, so it is a good idea to line out a series of small steps that can be accomplished in small chunks of time. Think in terms of the long haul, what do you want to achieve by the end of the year.
When it comes to internet marketing, there is a learning curve with each product or process that you work with.
For instance, if you want to learn how to market in Facebook, find a guide that breaks the process down to 5 (or 10) steps. Commit to one step each month and spend half hour a day at it – don’t try to learn it in one sitting.
For some of you, drastic changes can work, but for most of us – the key is a series of gradual changes.
Don’t set yourself up for failure, the point of starting small is to introduce a new set of actions – gradually, that will eventually become habits. And once new actions become habits, motivation plays a less significant role on whether or not you take action.

NOTE: If you have a big project that needs to be done before you can move forward on your New Years Marketing Resolution (such as a new website, or setting up a contact list) do it in January before you lose your momentum.

Some people can do a fine job pursuing a goal by themselves, but for others (and those of you short on time), getting some support can make all the difference. Partner up with someone; co-workers, friends and/or family who have similar goals. Or, you might consider a coach who can not only push you to stay on track, but also shorten the learning curve.

Internet Marketing Tips: Aim for overall progress with your marketing strategy
Establishing marketing habits, no matter how small is a good thing. Instead of looking at the distance between where you are and where you want to be, look at what you accomplish on a daily (or weekly) basis. Make a list and cross off the items you have completed. That way you can visually see what you have accomplished. As long as you are making progress, you are headed in the right direction.
It is good idea to keep in mind that your rate of progress will not remain constant. Often times your rate of progress is much higher in the beginning and then slows down. Avoid the trap of expecting your progress to remain constant, in fact there will even be periods of time when you feel like your progress is in reverse. Don’t let that phase you – keep at it.
Internet Marketing Tip: Plan to re-motivate yourself when you get off marketing track
Motivation doesn’t last, remember the goal is to take action until the action becomes a habit. Sometimes it is important to recognize that you have gotten off track and re-motivate yourself. Remind yourself how important it is or you to follow through on your marketing strategy, and resell yourself on why putting in the work and time is worth it.
While you are still in your New Year ‘motivation high’, capture the feeling by writing down all of the reasons why you must accomplish your goal. Along with that write down how you are going to deal with days that your motivation is low and you don’t feel like taking action.
Motivation Tip 1 – Record a video of yourself stating the reasons why you need to keep pushing forward and why you mustn’t give up.
Motivation Tip 2 – Break your goal down into a series of steps and every time you complete a step, reward yourself. These small rewards can help you mark the little victories.
Motivation Tip 3 – Read inspirational stories and biographies of people who have succeeded in reaching the goals that you have set out for yourself. This will remind you that the journey isn’t always easy and you will experience ups and downs, but it will be worth the effort.
Internet Marketing Tips; Evaluate the results of your marketing actions, if they are not working be flexible
Just establishing a marketing strategy and taking action is not enough. If what you are doing is not working, you won’t be getting the results that you are after. For this reason it is important to evaluate your marketing statistics and simply do more of what’s working and less of what is not working.
Sometimes you may find that what you thought was going to work – doesn’t work at all and you will have to switch directions in order to accomplish the internet marketing goals you set for yourself. You may even have to abandon all of your planned actions and just focus on one goal.
There’s no point in continuing to do what doesn’t work.
Internet Marketing Tip: Be sure to make ‘fun’ part of your marketing plan
Whenever possible, come up with ways to make taking action more fun. Remember, it is going to be tough to stick to a new routine if you absolutely hate it. If there is a task that has to be done and you hate doing it, consider hiring someone else to do it.
If you love face to face visits, but hate telemarketing… hire an assistant to do the phone work. If you are dreading building relationships at social media, then come up with a contest that will get your prospects lining up to be part of your contact list.
If you stick to your goals and take action, think about how exciting 2014 will be. You can actually move up to bigger and better things.
It is your choice, at the end of the year you will either be filled with regret because you didn’t stick with your resolutions, OR you will be able to celebrate and look forward to a new set of New Years Resolutions for 2015.
